Barney obtained a BA LLB (cum laude) and LLD from Stellenbosch University. He is an admitted attorney, professor extraordinaire at Stellenbosch University's Graduate School of Business, Head of the USB's Africa Centre for Dispute Settlement and teaching fellow at the Graduate School of Business of UCT. He has had many years of experience in consulting, training and facilitation and has been a practising mediator and arbitrator since 1989. He is certified by the International Mediation Institute and ADR Group (UK) as a civil and commercial mediator of international standing. He is a co-founder and director of a leading labour law and labour relations practice with corporate clients across most sectors of the economy, including telecommunications, shipping, fishing, mining, publishing, retail and manufacturing. He has written extensively on mediation, negotiation and labour law, appears regularly on regional and national radio and is organiser and panel member of the Juta Annual Labour Law update. Barney co-trained the first intake of commissioners of labour dispute resolution body, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and served as part-time senior commissioner between 1996 and 1999. He was professor of law at Stellenbosch University until 1997., where he taught labour law, law of contract and intellectual property law. He is chair of the International Bar Association's Mediation Across Sectors sub-committee, external consultant to the World Bank Group's Office of Mediation Services and board member of the African Mediation Association.
